There are more than 100 arthritic or rheumatologic musculoskeltal diseases and conditions affecting thousands of New Mexicans.Rheumatological conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and others:, gout, lupus, , and the genetic predispositions of some New Mexicans to certain other disorders, can lead to diminished quality of life and disability if left untreated.
Rheumatology is a rapidly developing medical specialty with new treatment options appearing frequently. The disease outlook for people with chronic rheumatologic disorders is improving with the introduction of new forms of treatment and early diagnosis. The Rheumatology TeleECHO program is designed to provide a consultative link between specialists and community clinicians throughout the state. Its goals are to provide rheumatology consultations regarding any rheumatologic disease condition, and to train clinicians at distant sites to become experts in the care of these conditions so they might serve as local resources for rheumatologic care.
